Yobe Assembly Criticized for ‘Ignoble Role’ in Damuli Investment Probe

The Yobe State House of Assembly is facing growing public anger over what critics call its mishandling of a high-stakes probe into **Damuli Investment**, a limited liability company accused of failing to deliver on billions of naira worth of state contracts.

Damuli, a familiar name within Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration, was awarded multiple projects—including the construction and renovation of the Gujba Government Lodge—but allegedly abandoned them despite receiving full payment. According to a **July 1, 2025 petition** by Gujba elders, the company received **₦1.49 billion** for the lodge project but achieved only minimal progress.

Following public pressure, the Assembly set up an ad hoc committee on **August 5**, chaired by **Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo**. Its initial findings were damning: of **32 contracts** investigated, only one—renovation of a ₦40.3 million apartment at Yusufari Specialist Hospital—was fully completed. The Gujba lodge stood at **10 percent progress**, while hospital renovations in Damaturu, Potiskum, Nguru, Gashua, Damagun, and Geidam—worth a combined **₦5.56 billion**—stalled at **25 percent completion**. Several drainage and road works, some valued at over **₦800 million**, fared little better.

Yet the final report baffled observers: despite chronic underperformance, the committee **absolved Damuli Investment of wrongdoing**, claiming projects met specifications. Leaks of the report have fueled suspicions that lawmakers faced political pressure to alter their conclusions.

The silence of both the Assembly’s leadership and the state’s executive branch has intensified speculation about possible collusion. Critics warn that **Governor Buni’s alleged ties to Damuli’s leadership**—and to Secretary to the State Government **Baba Malam Wali**, rumored to be eyeing the 2027 governorship—could invite accusations of using state resources for political gain.

Analysts argue that concentrating critical contracts in a single firm represents a governance red flag. They urge Governor Buni to launch an **independent investigation** to clear his administration of suspicion, uphold due diligence, and deliver justice for Gujba residents. Failure to act, they warn, could tarnish his legacy as his tenure nears its end.
