University of Abuja Inducts 62 New Veterinarians in Historic White Coat Ceremony

In a groundbreaking event that marked both tradition and innovation, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Abuja held its first-ever White Coat and Oath-Taking Ceremony on Tuesday
The dual-purpose event celebrated the induction of 62 fresh veterinary graduates into the profession while also ushering 500- and 600-level students into their clinical years—a symbolic rite of passage signifying their transition from classroom learning to hands-on medical practice.

The Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Enem Simon Ikechukwu, welcomed guests with a heartfelt speech, describing the event as “an epoch-making occasion that blends pride, joy, and gratitude.”
He praised the graduates for their perseverance through rigorous academic training
“Being a veterinarian is more than a profession; it is a calling,” Prof. Ikechukwu remarked, urging the new doctors to embrace innovation and uphold the highest ethical standards.
“Through this oath-taking ceremony, we are not sending you off but sending you forth—to conquer challenges and bring victories home.”

The ceremony also paid homage to the Faculty’s pioneers, including the late Prof. Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub, who established the Faculty against all odds, and the late Prof. Ikwe Ajogi, the Faculty’s first Dean. The event served as a testament to their legacy and the Faculty’s continued growth, with the Dean proudly noting that this was the 11th graduating class since the Faculty’s inception.
Adding to the significance of the day, the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) administered the official Veterinary Oath, formally recognizing the graduates as licensed professionals.
The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association also welcomed the new inductees, emphasizing the growing strength and impact of the profession across the country.
For the clinical students donning their white coats for the first time, the ceremony served as both a celebration and a call to action.
He emphasized the immense responsibility that comes with wearing the white coat—a globally recognized symbol of medical professionalism and ethical practice.
Prof. Ikechukwu encouraged them to rise to the challenge: “There must be a change in attitude. Separate yourselves from distractions and embrace the seriousness that clinical practice demands.”

The event was graced by key stakeholders, including captains of industry, university officials, and proud family members who supported the students throughout their academic journey. The newly appointed Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patricia Lar, was also in attendance, receiving a warm welcome from the Faculty as she embarks on her tenure.

As the ceremony concluded, the message was clear: the future of veterinary medicine is bright, and these young professionals are poised to lead with compassion, integrity, and innovation.
With their white coats freshly donned and oaths freshly sworn, the graduates are ready to make their mark—not just in clinics and laboratories, but in communities and industries across the nation.
