Top PDP Leaders Hold Closed-Door Meeting with Atiku at Transcorp Hilton Over 2027 Coalition Plans

In what appears to be a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, top leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently holding a closed-door meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
Sources familiar with the high-level meeting confirmed to National Update that the gathering includes PDP stalwarts from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The central agenda, insiders say, is to determine whether the PDP will fully integrate into a proposed opposition coalition or enter into a strategic electoral alliance aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election cycle.
The meeting, chaired by former Senate President David Mark, brings together some of the party’s most influential figures, including: Former Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Babangida Aliyu (Niger, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi) and Former PDP National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus
The political consultations come as various opposition blocs intensify efforts to build a formidable coalition platform ahead of 2027.
A source at the meeting told Nigeria Newsbite that the discussions are focused on whether PDP leaders should merge into a broader coalition party or maintain the PDP structure while collaborating through a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“What is being discussed here is not just a merger—it’s about redefining Nigeria’s political direction for 2027. The PDP is weighing its options carefully,” the source said.
Although no official statement has been issued yet, insiders hinted that the outcome of the meeting could shape the future leadership and structure of Nigeria’s main opposition forces.
The ongoing talks are expected to continue through the evening, with announcements possibly scheduled in the coming days.
