Sultan Declares Sunday as Eid Al-Fitr After Shawwal Crescent Moon is Sighted

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the first day of Shawwal 1446AH, marking the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr in Nigeria.

The announcement came on Saturday after the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee, confirmed multiple reports of moon sightings from across the country.

With the confirmation, Saturday, March 29, becomes the last day of Ramadan 1446AH, and Sunday will be observed as Eid Al-Fitr, signaling the end of the fasting period for Muslims.

The Sultan congratulated Nigerian Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan and prayed for divine guidance, peace, and national development. He also encouraged continued prayers for the unity and progress of the nation.

This marks the second time in six years that the Shawwal moon would been sighted on the 29th day of Ramadan, allowing for a 29-day fasting period instead of the full 30 days.
