Senate Faces Integrity Test as Saraki Calls for Open Probe into Akpabio-Natasha Controversy

As the controversy between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan continues to unfold, former Senate President Bukola Saraki has called for an open and transparent investigation to safeguard the integrity of the Nigerian Senate.

Saraki, in a statement released on his verified social media pages, emphasized that the allegations of sexual harassment, abuse of office, and disregard for Senate Standing Rules must not be swept under the carpet. He warned that failure to address the issue openly could damage public confidence in the legislative body.

“This is not just about Akpabio or Natasha; it is about protecting the institution of the Senate from any perception of misconduct or bias,” Saraki said. “The right measure to take is to institute an open, transparent, and honest investigation by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.”

The controversy erupted following claims by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan that Senate President Akpabio had acted inappropriately towards her. The Senate President, in turn, denied the allegations, with his supporters accusing Akpoti-Uduaghan of attempting to undermine his leadership. The situation has since escalated into a political standoff, drawing widespread public and media attention.

Saraki pointed to a precedent from his time in office when he voluntarily appeared before the Senate Ethics Committee after allegations were made against him. He urged the current leadership to take the same approach, allowing for a fair investigation that would restore confidence in the upper chamber.

“The Senate must not be seen as a place where serious allegations are ignored or where the rules are manipulated to protect certain individuals. The only way to clear the air is to ensure a full and independent probe into this matter,” Saraki added.

This controversy comes at a critical time when the Senate is already facing scrutiny over governance issues and legislative priorities. Observers believe that how this case is handled could shape public perception of the 10th National Assembly.

For now, all eyes are on the Senate leadership to see whether it will heed Saraki’s call for transparency or attempt to manage the crisis behind closed doors.
