Power Outage: Nigeria’s National Grid Suffers First Collapse of 2025

Nigeria experienced widespread power outages on Saturday as the national electricity grid collapsed for the first time this year.

The collapse, which occurred at 1:56 PM according to data from the Nigerian System Operator (niggrid.org), has left many parts of the country in darkness. While the exact cause of the failure remains unknown, authorities have yet to provide an official explanation.

This incident adds to the ongoing struggles of Nigeria’s power sector, which recorded at least 12 grid collapses in 2024 alone, underscoring persistent issues with infrastructure and reliability.

However, it was observed that certain areas in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, still have power, suggesting a partial restoration or isolated stability in some zones.

The frequent breakdowns of the grid continue to disrupt daily life and economic activities, emphasizing the critical need for reforms and investments in Nigeria’s power sector to ensure a more resilient electricity system.
