Peter Obi Pays Tribute to Buhari: “He Served Nigeria With Discipline, Dignity”

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has joined Nigerians in mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a disciplined leader who served the country with quiet dignity and firm resolve.

In a condolence message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi said the news of Buhari’s passing in London came as a shock, noting that his death marks a moment of reflection not only for his family and close allies but for the entire nation.

“His passing provides a solemn moment, not just for his family and close associates, but for our nation as a whole,” Obi wrote.

He recalled a personal encounter with Buhari during the 2023 electioneering season, commending the late President’s statesmanship and warm reception despite their political differences.

“When I met him during the campaigns, he received me with warmth and spoke like a true elder statesman. He commended my efforts and acknowledged the positive impact I had on Nigerian youths, even though we belonged to rival political parties.”

Obi acknowledged Buhari’s dual legacy—first as a military ruler and later as a democratically elected president—saying he made his contribution to Nigeria’s development in both eras.

“He did his best for Nigeria, a country that granted him the rare honour of leading it both in uniform and in civilian attire.”

Offering his prayers and sympathies to the late president’s family and all Nigerians, Obi said:

“May Almighty Allah, Most Gracious and Most Merciful, forgive President Buhari’s shortcomings, reward his efforts in service to the nation, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”

He ended his tribute with a message for all leaders, urging them to draw wisdom from Buhari’s passing.

“This is a reminder to all of us in leadership that life is short. We must lead with sincerity, compassion, and a strong sense of responsibility. Let us work together to build a Nigeria founded on justice, unity, and peace.”

President Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London, after a brief illness. He was 82.
