Peter Obi, Kayode Fayemi Reunite at Vatican, Urge Compassionate Leadership for Nigeria

Former Anambra Governor Peter Obi and ex-Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi reunited on Sunday at the Vatican for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, the 267th Bishop of Rome. The event, held inside the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica, marked a spiritual milestone for the two leaders who first met at Pope Francis’s inauguration ten years ago.

Obi reflected on the moment in a post on X, calling it a “deeply spiritual experience” and an opportunity to renew their shared commitment as public servants and believers.

Highlighting the new Pope’s message, Obi said Pope Leo XIV challenged world leaders to prioritize the poor and marginalized, insisting that faith must translate into tangible action.

“The Holy Father’s words remind us that true leadership is measured by how we serve the vulnerable and restore their dignity,” Obi said.

The former presidential candidate also met with President Bola Tinubu during the ceremony, exchanging greetings and expressing hope that Nigeria’s leadership would embrace the spirit of unity and compassion witnessed at the Vatican.

“I prayed for Nigeria’s future and recommitted myself to ensuring access to education, healthcare, and opportunities for all Nigerians,” Obi stated.

He ended with a message of hope and determination: “With faith and action, a new Nigeria is not just possible — it’s within our reach.”
