Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has addressed recent debates surrounding his past association with the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, clarifying that their interaction was strictly professional and devoid of political intent.
In a statement posted on his verified LinkedIn page on Wednesday, Obi explained that his engagement with Abacha stemmed from a national concern in the 1990s over delays in clearing goods at Nigerian ports—a matter that significantly impacted economic activity and livelihoods.
“Our meeting with him was borne out of collective concern as traders and importers over the prolonged delays in clearing goods at the ports,” Obi stated. “We approached him not as political actors, but as concerned citizens seeking pragmatic solutions.”
He disclosed that he was selected to join the presidential task force on port decongestion based on his standing in the business community at the time. To support his account, Obi released a copy of the official letter confirming his appointment to the task force.
“I hereby attach the letter which documents my co-opting, along with others, into the Taskforce on the decongestion of the Ports,” he noted.
Obi said the clarification was necessary to reaffirm his long-standing principles of civic responsibility and transparency. He stressed that his participation in the committee was consistent with his values of serving the public interest—not political ambition.
“This clarification is offered in the interest of truth,” Obi said. “I do not expect that all will be satisfied, especially those driven by ulterior motives. But the record must be clear.”
Despite acknowledging that critics may continue to question his motives, Obi expressed confidence that the documentation speaks for itself and underscores his commitment to openness.
“I make this public statement for historical record and to honour the trust Nigerians have placed in me,” he concluded.
