Osaro Onaiwu Mourns Former President Buhari: “A Forthright Leader in a Compromised Age”
Foremost Director-General of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Earl Osaro Onaiwu, has joined the nation in mourning the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a man of integrity, principle, and personal significance.
In a heartfelt tribute, Onaiwu reflected on his decades-long relationship with the late President, whom he described as “a long-time friend and senior uncle.”
“I received the news with a heavy heart,” Onaiwu said. “President Buhari was a forthright man who lived by principle. In a political era where many compromise values for power, he stood apart.”
He noted that Buhari’s refusal to interfere in electoral processes—particularly his decision not to manipulate elections in opposition-controlled states—set him apart from many of his contemporaries. “That speaks volumes about his character,” he added.
Onaiwu also praised Buhari’s calm disposition, discipline, and commitment to public service, even as he acknowledged the complexities of his time in office.
“I pray that the Almighty God forgives those who stole under his leadership without his knowledge, and also forgives those who used his name to perfect evil,” he said. “In all, may history be kind to him.”
He extended condolences to the late President’s family, associates, and Nigerians who valued his leadership style, noting his simplicity and sincerity as enduring qualities.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Onaiwu concluded.
