Not If, But When: Makinde Hints at Presidential Ambition — But Says PDP Must Heal First

As calls for visionary leadership echo across Nigeria, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has calmly stepped into the spotlight — not with a declaration, but with quiet confidence and a clear sense of purpose.

Appearing on Politics Today on Channels Television, Makinde made it known that he possesses the capacity and readiness to one day lead the nation as president — but he isn’t chasing applause or headlines.

“I don’t have any doubt that I have the capacity to occupy the highest office in this land,” he stated, “but is that what Nigerians want right now? Is that what my party is ready for? We’ll see. We still have a long way to go.”

Rather than rush into a 2027 presidential bid, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain says the party must first find its footing. “We must fix our party. We must rebuild the platform before anyone can truly aspire,” Makinde insisted. “If my political journey ends here, I’m still fulfilled.”

What sets Makinde apart is his refusal to be driven by external pressure or political gimmicks. “Nobody will set an agenda for me. I will set an agenda for myself,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to the people of Oyo State — and to the long game.

Just a day before the interview, he flagged off EXPOYO 2025, the Oyo State International Trade Fair — a symbol of his administration’s focus on economic growth, investment, and long-term prosperity.

“I will not play stunt politics,” he said. “I will not act just because it sounds good. I’ll stay focused, deliver results, and build for the future.”

Makinde’s message is clear: leadership isn’t about ambition — it’s about readiness, vision, and responsibility. And when the time is right, he won’t just run — he’ll be prepared.
