NIHSA Issues Fresh Flood Alert for 198 LGAs in 32 States, FCT

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has warned of high to very high flood risks in 198 local government areas across 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory between August 7 and 21.
Director-General Umar Ibrahim said rising river levels and persistent rainfall could trigger severe disruptions in over 100 communities and along major transport corridors.
States on the alert list include Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, FCT, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara, among others. In total, 832 communities fall within the projected impact zone.
NIHSA has urged emergency agencies to activate response plans and advised at-risk communities to prepare evacuation measures. Residents are encouraged to monitor state and community-specific forecasts via the NIHSA flood dashboard and official channels.
The alert forms part of NIHSA’s ongoing seasonal flood monitoring efforts, aimed at reducing the annual toll on lives, property, and infrastructure.
