Nigeria, UNICEF Forge Stronger Partnership to Boost Human Capital

The Federal Ministry of Finance and UNICEF are stepping up collaboration to accelerate human capital development and social protection in Nigeria.
The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, welcomed UNICEF’s new Country Representative, Hajar Saeed, in Abuja to strengthen joint efforts aimed at improving health, education, and social welfare as drivers of productivity, equity, and private-sector growth.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. Edun said, “Human capital is the engine of sustainable development. Our macroeconomic reforms are designed to improve lives, unlock economic potential, and ensure every Nigerian can participate in national growth.” He stressed that investments in people are central to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda and key to building a competitive, inclusive economy.
Ms. Saeed praised Nigeria’s reform momentum and reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to aligning its programmes with national priorities. She highlighted innovative financing options, such as debt-for-development and debt-for-climate swaps, to expand social coverage and enhance child welfare. Calling Nigeria a pivotal nation on the global stage, she emphasized UNICEF’s readiness to support initiatives that deliver measurable social impact and accelerate long-term development outcomes.
The meeting marks a renewed phase of strategic partnership, focused on ensuring that Nigeria’s economic reforms translate into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens, particularly children and vulnerable populations.
