Nigeria Deepens Global Peacekeeping Commitment with New Pledges at UN Ministerial in Berlin

In a powerful reaffirmation of Nigeria’s steadfast dedication to global peace and security, the Honourable Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, declared Nigeria’s renewed pledges and expanded peacekeeping contributions during Day 2 of the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 in Berlin.

Addressing the High-Level Pledging Session, the Minister underscored Nigeria’s unyielding resolve to support the United Nations and the global community in driving peace, especially in volatile regions. “Nigeria remains firm and resolute in our shared mission to uphold global stability,” he said, citing the country’s enduring contributions to key UN peacekeeping operations.

He highlighted Nigeria’s continued rotation of its Base Protection Force to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) and the sustained deployment of its Formed Police Unit under the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), both critical missions in regions grappling with instability.

Minister Badaru also pointed to Nigeria’s strategic role in advancing peace across West Africa, particularly under the framework of ECOWAS and the African Union. From historic interventions in Liberia and Sierra Leone to more recent peace efforts in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria has remained a frontline nation in conflict resolution and regional stabilization.

In a significant move to strengthen international cooperation, the Minister announced the renewal of Nigeria’s standing peacekeeping commitments and unveiled five new pledges under the United Nations Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System (UNPCRS). These pledges signal Nigeria’s readiness to scale up its logistical, operational, and personnel contributions to future UN missions.

“With these additional commitments, Nigeria reinforces its legacy as a dependable partner for peace,” Minister Badaru concluded, affirming the country’s enduring place in global peacekeeping history.
