MADI Condemns NYSC for Harassing Corps Member Over Viral Video

***Says Freedom of Expression Must Be Protected

Human rights group, Make A Difference Initiative (MADI), has strongly criticized the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for allegedly harassing a corps member over a viral video in which she decried the country’s worsening economic hardship and labeled Nigeria’s president as “terrible.”

Reports indicate that NYSC officials have pressured the corps member to delete the video, subjecting her to threats and intimidation.

In response, MADI, in a statement signed by Executive Director Dr. Lemmy Ughegbe and Director of Strategic Development Augustine Eigbe, condemned the NYSC’s actions as a violation of free speech.

“Section 39(1) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended) guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of expression. It is unacceptable that instead of addressing the real economic concerns raised, NYSC officials are resorting to intimidation,” the statement read.

MADI called on the NYSC to immediately cease all forms of harassment against the corps member and insisted that she must not face retaliation for exercising her constitutional rights.

The organization also urged the Federal Government, human rights groups, and the public to stand against any attempt to suppress free speech, warning that victimization of the corps member would be met with strong resistance and legal action.

“Freedom of expression is a pillar of democracy, and young Nigerians must not be bullied into silence,” MADI stated.
