Kebbi woman arrested for burying newborn alive, baby rescued by villagers

A 20-year-old woman, Maryam Atiku, has been arrested by the Police in Kebbi State for allegedly burying her newborn baby girl alive in a bush near Malam Yaro village, Dandi Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, said Atiku gave birth at home on June 25, 2025, and allegedly tied the baby’s neck with wrappers, covered her mouth, and buried her in a shallow grave.

The following day, a farmer, Kabiru Muhammad, noticed disturbed soil while working on his farm. His alarm drew villagers who dug up the grave and found the baby miraculously still alive. She was rushed to the General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed she was in stable condition.
