Jimoh Ibrahim Highlights Tinubu’s Leadership, respect for Sovereignty at World Parliament in Uzbekistan

At the 150th session of the World Parliament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Chairman of Nigeria’s Senate Inter-Parliamentary Committee, praised President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering respect for national sovereignty, which he said is central to the success of Nigeria’s foreign policy, particularly in challenging times.

Ibrahim pointed to President Tinubu’s handling of the crisis in Niger as a key example of his strong leadership. Despite external pressures, Tinubu focused on Nigeria’s national interests while leading the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), demonstrating his commitment to sovereignty and peace-building.
“President Tinubu’s leadership is defined by his respect for the sovereignty of nations and his belief in using diplomacy to foster peace and democracy,” Ibrahim stated.

The Senator also discussed the importance of collaboration between Nigeria’s executive and legislative branches to reduce conflicts and ensure effective governance.
He explained that, while the separation of powers is fundamental, it is not absolute, citing Britain as a model of geocentric governance that allows for cooperation between branches for the greater good.

Ibrahim further elaborated that sovereignty should not be viewed as an unattainable ideal but rather as a basis for mutual respect among nations.
He argued that although no nation has complete control over every aspect of governance, collaboration and respect are essential for building democratic systems.

In line with his remarks, Ibrahim praised Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, which seeks to strengthen the relationship between the three branches of government and drive positive reform.
He emphasized that there should be no room for disagreement among government branches, especially as Nigeria is not currently facing a conflict. The focus, he said, should be on creating a unified, harmonious environment that promotes democracy and addresses the nation’s challenges.

The 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) continues in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from April 5 to April 9, 2025, with key figures like Ibrahim, Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives Hon.
