IWD: Nenadi Usman Urges Greater Inclusion of Women in Governance
The Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, has called for stronger legislative and policy measures to promote the full participation of women in governance and decision-making across Nigeria.
In a statement released to mark International Women’s Day, Usman congratulated women around the world, with special recognition for the resilience, dedication, and contributions of Nigerian women. She described them as pillars of society whose efforts have shaped communities, driven economic growth, and strengthened families and institutions nationwide.
“Nigeria can only reach its full potential when the voices, talents, and leadership of women are fully represented and respected in every sphere of national life,” Usman said. She emphasized that this day is not only a celebration of women’s achievements but also a reminder of the ongoing need to address structural barriers that limit women’s participation in politics and governance.
A former senator, Usman highlighted that advancing women’s rights and opportunities has been a cause she pursued passionately during her time in the Nigerian Senate.
She recalled her advocacy for legislation and policies that aimed to empower women, increase representation in political offices, and provide avenues for meaningful engagement in national decision-making processes.
Usman further stressed that the progress of the nation is closely tied to gender equity.
“Strong, inclusive governance cannot be achieved without women at the table,” she said. “It is essential that policies, programs, and institutions create spaces where women can contribute fully to leadership, policymaking, and socio-economic development.”
The Labour Party chairman urged lawmakers, policymakers, civil society, and all stakeholders to intensify efforts to ensure women have equal access to opportunities in governance and leadership.
She called for deliberate reforms, including targeted legislation, mentorship programs, and initiatives that remove barriers to women’s participation in political and economic life.
Usman’s statement comes as Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day, a day that highlights both the achievements of women and the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
Her message underscores the belief that meaningful national development can only be achieved when women are empowered and included as active participants in shaping the country’s future
