INEC Unveils Timetable for 2027 General Elections

Nigeria’s electoral umpire has formally set the countdown to the next general elections, with the presidential and National Assembly polls scheduled for February 20, 2027.
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced the dates on Friday while briefing journalists in Abuja, signalling the official opening of the 2027 election cycle.
Amupitan said the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections will take place on March 6, 2027, two weeks after the federal contests, in line with the commission’s established electoral sequence.
The announcement provides early clarity for political parties, aspirants and stakeholders, effectively triggering internal party alignments, consultations and strategic positioning ahead of the nationwide vote.
By fixing the timetable nearly a year in advance, INEC aims to give electoral actors sufficient time to prepare while reinforcing institutional certainty around the democratic process.
More details to follow.
