Imperial Presidency: How Nigerians are being treated like conquered people

The recent actions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have raised serious eyebrows across Nigeria, provoking intense debate about the state of our democracy. The president’s broadcast on the Rivers crisis has left many questioning his motives and the constitutionality of his actions. As a nation, we must ask ourselves: Does the 1999 Constitution grant President Tinubu the power to suspend a democratically elected governor? If so, what procedures were followed? And if not, does this not amount to an abuse of office and state capturing?

The Constitution is clear: a governor can only be removed from office through impeachment by the state House of Assembly, death, resignation, or completion of tenure. President Tinubu’s actions seem to disregard this fundamental principle, raising concerns about his commitment to the rule of law. The selective treatment of Governor Sim Fubara, while sparing Wike, further fuels suspicions of political motivation and bias.

This issue transcends party affiliations and geographical boundaries. It is about the very fabric of our democracy and the protection of citizens’ rights. As Nigerians, we must unite to speak against this injustice, impunity, and abuse of power. The implications are enormous and profound: if allowed to stand, this sets a dangerous precedent where opposition leaders will be subservient to the ruling party, fearing unjust removal from office.

I urge the judiciary, the last hope of the common man, to intervene and save our democracy. We must not set wrong precedents for future generations. President Tinubu must surround himself with people who will speak truth to power, rather than sycophants who prioritize pleasing him over upholding the Constitution.

“Nigerians are already conquered people, that is the only reason why such impunity can prevail.” We must not let this statement become a prophecy. We must rise up, demand accountability, and defend our democracy. The time to act is now.
