Honouring fallen heroes demands better welfare for serving troops -Yar’Adua
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, has called on the Federal Government and Nigerians to move beyond the symbolism of Armed Forces Remembrance Day by committing to sustained improvements in the welfare and working conditions of military personnel.
Speaking during activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Yar’Adua said the annual observance should not be limited to parades and wreath-laying ceremonies, but should serve as a national moment of accountability and renewed action in addressing the realities faced by troops on the frontlines.
He paid tribute to officers and men of the Armed Forces who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifices as the foundation upon which Nigeria’s peace, unity, and territorial integrity rest. According to him, the courage and dedication of fallen heroes must be honoured through policies that prioritise the wellbeing of those still serving.
The senator acknowledged ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to improve conditions of service within the military, but stressed that evolving security challenges demand more consistent investment in modern equipment, advanced training, and functional military infrastructure. He noted that welfare, logistics, and morale are critical factors that directly influence operational effectiveness and national security outcomes.
Yar’Adua also drew attention to the often-overlooked needs of military families, stressing that the burden of service extends beyond personnel in uniform. He urged state governments to complement federal initiatives by strengthening support systems for veterans, widows, and dependants of fallen service members.
Describing Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a moment for sober national reflection, the lawmaker called on Nigerians to embrace unity and collective responsibility in safeguarding peace and security. He said respect for the Armed Forces should be demonstrated consistently through public support, institutional reforms, and sustained advocacy for better welfare.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 15 in honour of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces those who fell during internal security operations and international peacekeeping missions.
Yar’Adua concluded by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to legislative measures aimed at strengthening military welfare, improving conditions of service, and preserving the memory of Nigeria’s fallen heroes, while offering prayers for the repose of their souls.
