Gunmen Attack Obi’s Convoy in Benin, ADC Raises Alarm
The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has confirmed that gunmen attacked the convoy of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday.
According to the statement signed by POMR spokesman Ibrahim Umar, the incident occurred shortly after the formal declaration of former NBA President, Olumide Akpata, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
POMR alleged that unidentified armed men trailed Obi and other ADC leaders from the party’s secretariat in Benin to the residence of former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.
The attackers were said to have opened fire at the gate of the residence and damaged several vehicles within the premises.
The media office described the incident as a brazen assault and what it termed a “survived assassination attempt.”
However, POMR confirmed that Obi and other ADC leaders present at the scene were unharmed.
In a brief remark after the incident, Obi reportedly expressed disappointment that such violence could occur at the home of a respected elder statesman like Oyegun. He was said to have displayed cartridges allegedly recovered after the shooting.
The statement also referenced remarks previously attributed to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo in July 2025, in which he allegedly warned Obi against entering the state without permission — a claim the governor had earlier refuted.
POMR stressed that Obi, as a presidential aspirant, is constitutionally entitled to freedom of movement and association under Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution.
Awaiting Official Response
As of press time, there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the alleged attack.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The development has heightened political tension in Edo State, with calls from party supporters for calm, restraint, and a thorough security probe.
Further updates are expected as security agencies respond to the claims.
