Finance Minister Says Economists Are The Engine Room of Nigeria’s Future

Nigeria’s economic policy engine is set for a turbo boost as the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun has thrown his weight behind deeper collaboration with the nation’s top economists.
Hosting the leadership of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) in his Abuja office today, Edun hailed the Society as “the intellectual and statistical powerhouse of applied economics in Nigeria,” stressing that its insights are vital for reforms that will unlock private investment, create jobs, and drive long-term growth.
Director of Information and public Relatrions, Muhammed Manga in a statement quoted Edun to have pledged the Ministry’s full backing for the NES’s upcoming annual conference.
The Minister said, “When economists and government speak with one voice on policy, we strengthen market confidence and deliver real economic results for Nigerians.”
Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya, noted that the NES helps “paint a clearer and more accurate picture of Nigeria’s economy,” making it easier to attract investors and sustain reform momentum.
NES President, Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, revealed that this year’s conference—Rethinking Africa’s Development: Pathways Forward—will feature Nobel laureate Prof. Roy Pearson and other global thought leaders. More than 200 research papers will be presented, and 500 economics students will participate, sharpening the skills of Nigeria’s next generation of policy shapers.
With Abuja set to become the epicentre of economic debate, the stage is set for fresh ideas to fuel a more prosperous, inclusive, and stable Nigeria.
