FG Tells Media CSOs, NGOs to Promote Agricultural Policies
As part of Agenda Four of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at modernizing agriculture through mechanization, research, and digital transformation, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has introduced the National Electronic Extension Platform (NEEP).
This initiative, coordinated by the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension, marks a new era in knowledge dissemination, real-time farmer support, and evidence-based decision-making.
Addressing journalists, civil society organizations (CSOs), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Professor Garba Hamidu Sharubutu, emphasized that farmers and key stakeholders should leverage this innovation to bridge the gap between research and practice.
He noted that Nigeria is moving toward an era where agricultural extension services transcend physical barriers, making information more accessible to farmers nationwide.
Professor Sharubutu highlighted key initiatives under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, to include the
Launch of ARCN TV and Radio (2021): A digital platform to educate farmers on modern agricultural practices,
Electronic Technology Transfer (ETT) Portal, a platform where experts from research institutes and federal colleges of agriculture interact with farmers through telecom value-added services, fostering knowledge exchange.
Others are, adopted Villages & Agricultural Research Outreach Centers: Under the West African Agriculture Productivity Program (WAAPP), these centers serve as hubs of authoritative agricultural information for local communities and Agricultural Research Museum, a one-stop repository for commercial agricultural research findings, enhancing Nigeria’s capacity in scientific advancements and technology transfer.
Professor Sharubutu urged journalists, NGOs, and CSOs to work collectively in propagating government policies and programs, particularly in the agriculture sector, given its crucial role in food security and economic development.
He emphasized that effective communication and public engagement will help ensure that farmers across Nigeria benefit from these groundbreaking initiatives.
With the introduction of NEEP, ETT, and other agricultural innovations, the Federal Government is committed to transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape. Stakeholder collaboration, media advocacy, and community engagement will be essential in ensuring the success of these programs, ultimately driving national food security and economic prosperity.
