FG Moves to Enforce Discipline, Accountability in Civil Service
The Federal Government has issued a strong directive to civil servants, emphasizing the need for discipline, accountability, and adherence to public service regulations in the conduct of government business.
Speaking at the Senior Management Meeting of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya decried rising cases of insubordination and non-compliance with civil service protocols.
She warned that any breach of public service rules would attract disciplinary actions, including queries, warnings, or dismissal in severe cases.
Director of Information and Public Relations, Muhammed Manga in a statement quoted her to have said,
“The effectiveness of government institutions depends on discipline, accountability, and adherence to established rules,” Jafiya stated. “It is unacceptable for staff to bypass the civil service hierarchy or act outside extant regulations.”
To address these challenges, the ministry is strengthening its Performance Management System (PMS) to monitor staff efficiency, curb indiscipline, and promote a culture of excellence. The system will also identify and reward outstanding performance while sanctioning erring officers.
Jafiya commended the leadership of Finance Minister Wale Edun and Minister of State Doris Uzoka-Anite, describing them as champions of transparency and efficiency.
She urged ministry officials to uphold professionalism, ensuring Nigeria’s financial management aligns with global best practices.
Supporting the initiative, Permanent Secretary (Special Duties) Mr. Raymond Omenka Omachi emphasized the need for continuous staff training to enhance capacity and service delivery.
With this renewed commitment to discipline and accountability, the Ministry of Finance is positioning itself as Nigeria’s leading service-oriented institution, dedicated to efficient public financial management and national development.
