Farmers Push for Moringa Revolution to Tackle Unemployment, Boost Economy
The Moringa Productions, Marketers, and Farmers Welfare and Empowerment Association of Nigeria has urged the Federal and State Governments to champion a moringa farming revolution to address youth unemployment, curb insecurity, and generate billions of dollars in revenue for national development.
Speaking at a media briefing in Nyanya, Abuja, on Monday, the Association’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ashimashiga Akoloaga, emphasized that with 50 million youths supported through access to land and farm inputs, moringa farming could inject approximately $3.75 billion monthly into Nigeria’s economy.
Akoloaga described moringa as a multipurpose crop with applications in pharmaceuticals, food processing, fertilizers, and animal feeds, adding that it has become a highly sought-after export commodity due to its superior quality.
Beyond economic benefits, he stressed that large-scale moringa farming could address social vices such as banditry and kidnapping, which are fueled by unemployment. He also highlighted its role in climate change mitigation and global warming control.
To facilitate growth, Akoloaga announced plans to introduce agricultural inputs, consultancy services, and equipment leasing in 2024. The Association has also provided 9% interest rate loans and guarantees off-take of produce from farmers to ensure sustainability.
Meanwhile, the Association’s Secretary-General, Dr. Shuaibu Adamu, called on stakeholders to prioritize agricultural development over politics, stressing that supporting moringa farming could alleviate poverty and create jobs for millions of youths.
Adamu revealed plans to hold an International Moringa Summit and conduct elections at all administrative levels to streamline operations nationwide.
