Defiant Dickson Challenges Akpabio, Slams Senate’s Secret Vote on Emergency Rule
Senator Henry Seriake Dickson has openly challenged Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of attempting to silence dissent over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s State of Emergency declaration in Rivers State.
In a statement on Friday, the Bayelsa senator revealed that he and a few colleagues strongly opposed the emergency rule during a closed-door Senate session, citing constitutional violations, particularly the suspension of elected officials.
“I spoke and voted against the proclamation, supported by Senator Aminu Tambuwal and others who were denied the chance to speak,” Dickson disclosed.
Despite their objections, the majority of senators backed the move, leading to concerns over transparency in the decision-making process.
“I would have preferred an open and robust debate, so every voice could be heard. But now, it’s up to the judiciary to determine the legality of this action,” he added.
A viral video has since emerged, capturing a heated exchange between Dickson and Akpabio before the closed session. The senator accused the Senate leadership of censorship, insisting that no lawmaker needs permission to express opinions on national matters.
“The Senate President was unfair, attempting to misrepresent my stance and suppress free speech,” Dickson asserted.
Despite the outcome, he vowed to remain a strong voice for democracy, urging Nigerians to stand firm in defending their rights.
“These challenges only reinforce my commitment to duty. I urge all Nigerians to protect our democratic values and demand accountability,” he declared.
The senator also reassured the people of Rivers State of his continued support, emphasizing the need to safeguard democratic institutions.
