Boat Mishap Kills 29 in Niger, 11 Missing, 50 Rescued
At least 29 people have died and 11 others remain missing after a boat carrying about 90 passengers capsized on Wednesday in Gausawa community, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), which confirmed the incident, said the tragedy occurred around 11:30 a.m. when the overloaded wooden boat hit a tree stump and overturned.
According to NSEMA Director General, Mallam Ibrahim Arah, the vessel had departed Tugan Sule in Shagunu ward en route Dugga, where the passengers, mostly women and children, were heading for a condolence visit.
As of 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, 29 bodies had been recovered with the help of local divers, while 50 passengers were rescued alive. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for the remaining 11.
