Autistic Teenager Kanyeyachukwu Honoured with ₦25 Million by First Lady for Record-Breaking Artistic Feat

In a heartwarming ceremony held on the eve of Children’s Day, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, awarded ₦25 million to 15-year-old autistic artist Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo Okeke, celebrating his historic achievement of setting a Guinness World Record for creating the world’s largest canvas painting.

Kanyeyachukwu, whose artwork now holds the world record at 12,304 square meters, created a vivid mural adorned with a multicolored autism ribbon and expressive emojis—turning his neurodivergence into a global symbol of brilliance and creativity.

Receiving him at the State House, Senator Tinubu described the young artist as a national treasure, applauding his courage and talent despite the challenges of autism.

“I heard his story and was deeply moved. I invited him here because his accomplishment deserves the highest recognition. Children like Kanye show us that with love and support, disabilities can become possibilities,” she said.

She also encouraged parents of children with special needs to discover and nurture their children’s unique talents rather than dwell on limitations.

“Special needs children often show interest in one key area—art, music, math, or science. As parents, we must help them channel that gift. Kanye’s story should be a beacon of hope for every family walking this path.”

The visit was also attended by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy. Representing the Minister, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, the Permanent Secretary Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammed (MFR, mni), hailed Kanyeyachukwu as a role model and praised the First Lady for leading by example in youth empowerment.
A statement by her special adviser on media and publicity, Nneka Ikem Anibeze quoted her to have said,
“Through the Renewed Hope Initiative, Her Excellency is building bridges for young talents like Kanye to walk into their dreams,” he said. “This achievement reminds us that greatness knows no bounds—not age, not circumstance, not even autism.”

As the ceremony closed, Senator Tinubu presented a ₦25 million cheque and gifts to Kanyeyachukwu, who in return gifted the First Lady one of his original paintings along with the Guinness World Record certificate that now bears his name.
From quiet brushes on canvas to bold strokes on the world stage, Kanyeyachukwu’s journey proves that brilliance can come from the most unexpected places—and when recognized, it has the power to inspire an entire generation.
