Rivers 2027: APC Legacy Bloc Throws Weight Behind Fubara in NDC Race

Says Southeast Must Complete Eight-Year Tenure in Interest of Equity

The governorship aspiration of Blessing Fubara, a relative of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, received a major boost on Tuesday as a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state openly endorsed his bid for the 2027 governorship election under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The endorsement comes as political stakeholders await the outcome of the NDC governorship primary, with the party’s National Executive Committee expected to deliberate on the exercise in Abuja.
Backing the NDC aspirant is the APC Legacy Group, a coalition of founding members drawn from the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN), all of which merged to form the APC in 2014.
In a statement jointly signed in Port Harcourt by Hon. Ibiwari George Green, Hon. Eric Koko and Hon. Alaso Edward Hart, the group declared its total support for Blessing Fubara, who recently resigned from the APC and joined the NDC to pursue his governorship ambition.
The group said its endorsement was driven by the principles of justice, fairness and political balance, arguing that Rivers Southeast Senatorial District should be allowed to complete what it described as its remaining tenure in Government House.
According to the APC stakeholders, the political circumstances that led to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s exit from the governorship race have created a moral obligation for political actors to support another candidate from the same senatorial district.
They noted that Blessing Fubara’s commitment to serve only one term if elected provides a pathway for maintaining the state’s rotational arrangement while ensuring that power returns to another senatorial zone after 2031.
The group also pledged to mobilise resources and grassroots support across the state to secure victory for the NDC aspirant in the 2027 election.
“As founding members of the APC in Rivers State, we reject the hijack of our party by individuals who neither built nor sustained its structures. Many legacy members have been pushed to the margins, but we remain because we are the true custodians of the party,” the statement said.
“We will use the 2027 governorship election to make a strong statement. Our support for Blessing Fubara is not merely personal; it is rooted in our longstanding struggle for equity, justice and political inclusion in Rivers State.
“Beyond his credentials, he represents the opportunity for Rivers Southeast Senatorial District to complete its turn in office. His pledge to serve only one term demonstrates a commitment to fairness and the preservation of the state’s political balance.”
The group described the aspirant as a youthful and humble politician capable of offering a fresh direction for the state, contrasting him with what it called the “old political order” that has dominated Rivers politics for years.
It further urged the leadership of the NDC to ensure transparency in the handling of its primary election and to announce the authentic choice of party members.
The APC Legacy Group also called on Rivers voters to resist political imposition and rally behind what it described as a credible push for equity and justice ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
The endorsement is expected to further reshape political alignments in Rivers State, where preparations for the 2027 election are already triggering new alliances and deepening divisions across party lines.
