Kogi West Senate Race: Aro’s Foray Sparks Debate Over APC Unity Ahead of 2027

The emerging contest for the Kogi West senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections is already stirring debate within the All Progressives Congress (APC), following the reported interest of former House of Representatives member Samuel Aro in the race.
Political stakeholders in the district say Aro’s possible bid for the APC ticket has triggered discussions about the future direction of the party in the area, with some warning that the development could test the party’s unity in one of its traditional strongholds.
Kogi West, largely populated by Yoruba-speaking communities, delivered significant support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election and remains politically strategic to the ruling party’s future electoral calculations.
However, the anticipated contest for the APC ticket has begun to generate speculation about potential internal divisions as aspirants position themselves ahead of the party’s primaries.
Sources within the district claim that the political entry of Aro—who previously contested the 2019 governorship election as running mate to Musa Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party—has raised questions among party loyalists about shifting alliances and the broader political calculations ahead of 2027.
The district is currently represented in the Senate by Sunday Karimi, who has gained attention in recent months for his outspoken stance on governance issues in Kogi State.
Karimi has repeatedly called for greater transparency in the management of local government resources and has advocated a political power shift to Kogi West in 2027, arguing that the district has faced decades of political marginalisation.
Observers say these positions have elevated his profile politically but may also have created tensions within certain political circles in the state.
Meanwhile, Aro’s reported entry into the contest has been linked by some political watchers to businessman and political figure Tunde Ayeni, who has previously been associated with political fundraising and opposition campaign activities, including those of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Although no official confirmation has emerged regarding such claims, the speculation highlights the intense political manoeuvring already taking shape in the state as leaders and aspirants begin positioning ahead of the next election cycle.
Aro’s recent political activities, including appearances at events attended by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo and former governor Yahaya Bello, have further fueled conversations within political circles about evolving alliances in the state.
However, supporters of the former lawmaker have dismissed suggestions that his ambition is part of any wider political strategy, insisting that he has every right to seek the party’s ticket and represent his constituency.
Political analysts say the unfolding situation underscores the early jostling for influence within parties as politicians begin strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
They note that while the APC remains dominant in Kogi West, maintaining party cohesion could prove critical as the senatorial contest approaches.
With political consultations expected to intensify in the coming months, stakeholders say the ability of party leaders to manage internal competition may ultimately determine whether the APC retains its grip on the district or opens space for opposition forces to gain ground.
