U.S. Advocacy Group Blames Igbo Governors for Kanu’s Detention, Urges Biafran Action

A U.S.-based advocacy organization, Ambassadors for Self Determination USA, has criticized South-East Nigerian political leaders for what it calls their deliberate inaction on the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and for ignoring the broader concerns of the region’s residents.
The statement, signed by the group’s chairman, Mazi Evans Nwankwo, came after remarks attributed to Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, who reportedly said President Bola Tinubu has “defied all agitations from Biafra.”
In its response, the organization described Umahi’s comments as a “shameful admission” that the aspirations of the Biafran people are being actively suppressed. It accused Igbo politicians of collaborating with Abuja to keep Kanu in detention and undermine regional self-determination.
The statement singled out leaders including Charles Soludo, Dave Umahi, and Orji Uzor Kalu, accusing them of prioritizing personal ambition over the welfare of the Biafran people. It described these officials as modern-day “Warrant Chiefs” who allegedly pledged allegiance to the federal government in exchange for political advancement.
“Anybody expecting these Abuja errand-boys to campaign for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release is dreaming,” the group said. “They are the ones keeping him in detention, not the captured and corrupt Abuja bench. A cabal of fewer than 20 individuals holds millions hostage, ensuring Biafra remains stifled—all for personal gain.”
The organization urged Biafrans to recognize these internal “traitors,” reject their provocations, and prepare for the 2027 elections to prevent them from reclaiming power. It also emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and resisting moves that could undermine regional protests or sit-at-home actions.
“The time for pretense is over,” the group concluded. “Biafra lives in the hearts of the people, not in the corridors of Abuja’s corruption. The rising sun of freedom will not be eclipsed by traitors.”
