Sani Slams Military Spending Priorities Amid Escalating Insecurity
In a pointed critique of Nigeria’s security management, former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has condemned the diversion of defence funds toward non-combat-related projects such as malls, hotels, and universities.
Speaking on Politics Today, the outspoken lawmaker questioned why institutions tasked with defending the country are investing in real estate ventures while soldiers on the frontline struggle with inadequate gear and supplies.
Sani’s comments is coming at a time when insecurity continues to plague various regions of Nigeria. He warned that misappropriating funds meant for national defence not only weakens morale among troops but also signals misplaced priorities in the country’s fight against terrorism and banditry.
“While our security forces are building shopping plazas and schools, the men and women risking their lives in the field are under-equipped. This is a dangerous disconnect,” he said.
Highlighting the regional context, Sani pointed out that Nigeria’s security crisis mirrors broader instability in West Africa, affecting countries like Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. He urged the government to move beyond rhetoric and embrace more sophisticated counter-terrorism measures.
“Our problem isn’t lack of awareness. It’s a lack of decisive action. Terrorism won’t end overnight, but misusing defence funds certainly makes it harder to win,” he added.
