Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Champions Global Ties for Nigerian Architecture

Nigeria’s architectural landscape is set for a transformative shift as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, champions stronger international collaborations to boost the sector’s global relevance.

During a high-level meeting with the leadership of the National Institute of Architects (NIA) in Abuja, the senator emphasized the critical role of digital innovation and international partnerships in advancing Nigerian architecture, particularly in the tourism and cultural sectors.

“Nigerian architects have consistently blended indigenous designs with modern innovations. However, to secure our place in the global architectural landscape, we must strategically integrate our heritage, expertise, and international collaborations,” she stated.

In a bold move, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan revealed plans to strengthen ties between Nigeria and top global architectural institutions, advocating for bilateral agreements that would enable Nigerian architects to participate in international projects, competitions, and exhibitions.

She assured stakeholders that her committee would push for policy reforms that encourage international exposure and knowledge transfer, ensuring Nigeria remains competitive in the ever-evolving world of architecture.
In response, NIA President, Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi, outlined key projects requiring legislative backing, including, a Capital Theatre, National Gallery of Arts, National War Museum and a National Museum

These initiatives, he explained, would elevate Abuja’s cultural appeal, foster national pride, and attract international tourism and investment.

Adeniyi further stressed the need for an updated Building Code to ensure safety, sustainability, and alignment with global best practices, urging the senator to support a legislative review.
