Power Surge-Induced Fire Destroys Ilorin Market Shops
A fire outbreak at the Olusola Saraki Market in Ilorin West Local Government Area on Friday night has reignited concerns about the safety of public infrastructure and energy distribution in markets across Nigeria.
The inferno, reportedly caused by a power surge, ravaged seven shops, destroying goods worth millions of naira. Meat vendors, clothing retailers, and provision store owners bore the brunt of the disaster.
Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the incident and credited the quick intervention of the fire brigade with saving the remaining 262 shops in the market.
“The incident was caused by a power fluctuation from the distribution company, which led to the surge,” Adekunle said, emphasizing the importance of prompt response.
Despite the firefighters’ efforts, the incident has left shop owners devastated. Many expressed frustrations over recurring power-related disasters and the financial losses they now face without adequate compensation or insurance coverage.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, extended his sympathies to those affected, urging authorities to prioritize modern energy infrastructure and ensure proper market electrification standards.
This latest fire highlights the urgent need for improved power distribution systems and fire safety protocols in markets across Nigeria. Experts have called for public-private partnerships to establish fire prevention measures, while market associations are pushing for mandatory fire insurance for all traders.
As investigations into the fire continue, stakeholders are urging the Kwara State Government and power distribution companies to take decisive steps in addressing the root causes of such disasters, ensuring the safety of lives, properties, and businesses.
