The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a bold statement questioning the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following controversial remarks by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
During a recent media chat, Wike proclaimed himself “in charge” of political structures in both Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), asserting he will deliver these regions to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
“I’m the general commander of the political structure in Rivers State,” Wike declared confidently. “You don’t need a governor to be in charge. In Rivers, I’m in charge. So also the FCT.”
National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko in the statement said the association is alarmed by these assertive claims, questioning the implications for Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
“Is INEC merely a puppet, doing Wike’s bidding? How can any political figure confidently predict outcomes in an election that has yet to occur? These critical issues compel attention.”
HURIWA urged INEC to clarify its position and the measures it will take to ensure the election remains free from manipulation. The rights group maitained that the integrity of an election begins long before the ballots are cast; it hinges on public trust in a neutral electoral process.
“Wike’s statements raise troubling concerns about electoral manipulation and the abuse of political power.”
Given Nigeria’s history of electoral interference, HURIWA demanded immediate action from INEC to restore faith in the electoral process.
“The electoral commission has a monumental task ahead. It must confirm that the 2027 elections are not predetermined by powerful political figures behind closed doors.”
HURIWA insisted on the need for transparency and independent oversight.
‘While Wike is entitled to rally support for his preferred candidate, prematurely declaring his intention to deliver political territories undermines the sanctity of the electoral process. ”
HURIWA called on INEC to implement confidence-building measures that assure Nigerians of a credible electoral environment.
“Every vote must count, and real democracy demands that outcomes are decided at the ballot box, not orchestrated by political commanders.”
The stakes are high as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections. The group stated further that the nation cannot afford another election clouded by suspicion. “It’s imperative that the upcoming polls are conducted fairly, transparently, and with demonstrable independence.’
