Edo Assembly Leadership Crisis Deepens as Agbebaku Steps Down

The political temperature in Edo State has risen again following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku as Speaker of the State House of Assembly, amid reports of an impeachment move against him.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, announced his exit on Monday through his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, who said details of the development would be made public later.

In a swift leadership change, Yekini Idaiyi, representing Akoko Edo II Constituency, was reportedly sworn in as the new Speaker.

Agbebaku’s departure marks the latest twist in a prolonged power struggle that has repeatedly unsettled the Edo Assembly.

The crisis dates back to May 2024 when Agbebaku suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to remove him and other principal officers. The Speaker had also alleged outside interference in the dispute, including claims that ritual objects were being brought into the Assembly complex.

The suspended lawmakers rejected the allegations, insisting that their suspension was politically motivated.

The political drama continued into May 2025 when Agbebaku dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress. His defection reportedly followed pressure from some APC interests seeking his removal because of his PDP background and previous political activities.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, however, reportedly stood behind Agbebaku, arguing that his loyalty and cooperation were important to the administration.

That political backing now appears to have ended with Agbebaku’s resignation, opening a new chapter in the struggle for control of the Edo legislature.

Idaiyi’s emergence as Speaker is expected to reshape the balance of power within the Assembly and could have wider implications for the relationship between the legislature and the Okpebholo administration.
