Karu Market Inferno: FCDA, AMAC urged to re-allocate shops to original owners
The Senate has urged the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), to re-allocate shops affected by fire outbreak at Karu main market to original owners after their rehabilitation.
The red chamber also urged the federal government through its Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs , Disaster Management, Social Development and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to urgently make palliative and relief provisions to cushion the effect of fire on the victims.
Consequently, it mandated its committees on Environment and Legislative compliance, to ensure strict compliance with the resolutions and report back within four weeks.
The resolutions were coming following a motion sponsored to that effect by Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT).
Senator Kingibe in the motion titled: “The Karu Fire Outbreak and the need for safer public places” told the Senate that the fire outbreak that occured at Karu main market on June 27, 2024, left scores of traders in tears after goods worth billions of Naira were destroyed.
She lamented that as disclosed by eye witness accounts, the inferno razed almost all the shops and destroyed food stuff, electronics, cosmetics, clothes among other consumables and non-consumable items worth billions of Naira.
‘These fire outbreaks have become one too many already; with attendant losses running to billions of Naira. In the last six months, there have been several incidents of this nature. From Idumota Market Area in Lagos; to the Police Shopping Complex, Mararaba, Nasarawa State; to the Yan Katako Market, Rijiyar Lemu Area of Fagge LGA, Kano State, just to mention a few.
“These fire outbreaks all had the same causative factors which hinged on basic building safety regulations that were either inadequate or not adhered to or out rightly not in place.
“This state of unpreparedness in safety management cuts across private homes, government buildings, open parks and gardens, markets, shopping malls, Warehouses, Sawmills, fuel tankers, gas and fuel Stations, educational establishments, shops, clubs, hospitals, hotels, and restaurants: thereby exposing ourselves to avoidable mishaps”, she said .

FCT senator Pledges Support for Victims of Abuja Market Fire
The senator representing the Federal Capital Territory Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe, has expressed her heartfelt sympathy for the victims of the recent fire at Kaura Market in Abuja.
The devastating blaze, which occurred on Friday, August 17, destroyed 44 shops, leaving traders in despair.
Senator Kingibe has committed to facilitating the necessary support to help them recover from the disaster.
In a statement delivered by Comrade John Destiny, head of Kingibe’s Constituency Office, the senator expressed relief that no lives were lost in the tragedy. She also urged the affected traders to remain hopeful, assuring them that aid would be provided to help them rebuild their livelihoods.
The senator advised traders to be vigilant in handling electrical appliances to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Two victims, Mercy Nnamani and Chukwuemeka Nwonyi, recounted the heartbreaking moment they learned of the fire. Nwonyi described how he received a call early on Saturday morning, only to find that his fully stocked shop had been reduced to ashes. Both traders were left in shock and uncertainty, with no clear understanding of what caused the fire.
Joy Gimba, another trader whose sister lost over 250 crates of eggs in the fire, speculated that the blaze may have been triggered by an electrical surge when power was restored to the area after a blackout.
Donatus Ndukwe, the Public Relations Officer of the market, also suffered significant losses. He lost two shops—one selling plastics and the other kitchen utensils—both of which had just been restocked. Ndukwe, now facing a severe financial setback, stressed that suicide is not an option for him and called on the government, corporate bodies, and individuals to provide much-needed assistance.
The incident has left many traders in a state of distress, struggling to come to terms with their losses and uncertain about their future. Senator Kingibe’s commitment to supporting them offers a glimmer of hope as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding.
