15 African, American Icons to Be Honoured at 2025 AFRO Awards in Los Angeles
At least 15 distinguished Africans and Americans will be honoured for their humanitarian impact and contributions to culture and community development at the 2025 AFRO Awards scheduled for October 25 in Los Angeles, California.
The annual AFRO Awards, powered by the Oduala Foundation, celebrates individuals and organisations whose work continues to uplift lives across Africa, the diaspora, and beyond.
In a statement, Chief Taiwo Oduala, Executive Director and Founder of the AFRO Awards, described the event as a “unique Afro-centric excellence platform dedicated to honouring changemakers whose actions continue to redefine humanity, creativity, and purpose.”

Among this year’s honourees are:

Howard Hewett – Music Icon Award: The GRAMMY Award-winning legend recognised for his timeless voice and lasting influence on global audiences.
Binta Ayo-Mogaji (Nigeria) – Celebrated film icon whose trailblazing work in African cinema has inspired generations.
Dr. Azeezat Abiola-Amusat (Nigeria) – Honoured for preserving and promoting the beauty of African heritage through creative innovation.
Michael Blackson – Diaspora Humanitarian Award: Global entertainer and philanthropist acknowledged for his efforts to uplift communities through the Michael Blackson Academy.
Kolapo Soretire – Community Innovator & Impact Award: Recognised for driving transformative change through innovation and public service.
Stonebwoy (Ghana) – Global Music Excellence Award: Internationally acclaimed artist and humanitarian celebrated for his influence in music and philanthropy.
Omar J. Dorsey – Actor/Producer/Director Award: Honoured for redefining representation and storytelling in Hollywood.
Al Joyner – Olympic Champion Award: Sports legend lauded for his continued inspiration on and off the track.
The ceremony will also feature Sam Pounds, a GRAMMY-winning singer, songwriter, and producer, as a special guest performer.
The Sheen Media Group, the official media partner, will deliver exclusive red carpet coverage, interviews, and in-depth editorial storytelling across its platforms. Seven Singleton, son of legendary filmmaker John Singleton, will serve as on-site media correspondent, offering behind-the-scenes access to the honourees and special guests.
